January Tales From The Kasbah
Stayed in a sixteenth century Riad in the centre of old Marrakech for the first few days but now moved out to a Kasbah nearer the Atlas Mountains. A revelation to me is the history, customs and costumes of the Berber tribe, the original inhabitants of these lands – before being joined by the Moors of Granada, who were expelled in the 1490s by Ferdinand V & Isabel of Spain. The Berber Museum at the Jardin Majorelle was the eye opener. Conceived and built by Yves St. Laurent & Pierre Berge it’s a jewel. The garden where it sits also restored by YSL & PB and later gifted to the Moroccan state. To my eye the ordinary Moroccan has a very hard time of it while their boy wonder King and his cronies sip the cream.
